The first two of three voyages Jacques Cartier made to the Americas from France were in 1534 and 1535. He explored lands that are now present-day Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Montreal, and Funk Island. In spite of all of these discoveries, Cartier is best known for his exploration of the Hochelaga, or St. Lawrence River.

The cross made the Wendat angry. They saw that Cartier was claiming their land. Cartier was able to reassure Donnacona, the chief of the Wendat village called Stadacona (today known as Quebec). He even asked Donnacona if he could take his two sons, Taignoagny and Domagaya, back to France with him. He wanted to teach them French so that they could act as interpreters. Donnacona gave his permission, and Cartier promised to bring the two boys back to Canada on his next voyage. The next day, Cartier and his crew set sail for France.
